You have every reason to want to keep your heart closed off and protected right now. You may be feeling raw, like your heart can't take any more pummeling. Or perhaps you're feeling numb and unable to process the pain, doubts, and many griefs of the past year. Maybe your year has been full of blessing and there is an ache to it all because of the contrast between what you are experiencing and what others around you experience. Maybe your heart is still on lockdown because you can't predict where it will go or what it will do if you let it loose!
Our goal with this exercise is to bring our hearts out into the open, embracing vulnerability and resisting the downward spiral of fear and shame. By allowing our hearts room to breathe, we acknowledge both our human fragility and our fierce resilience. God is not finished with us yet!
The three essential questions of the Open Heart are:
Why am I here?
What do I want?
What do I need?
Please note that these are questions to consider without self-judgment or shame. We are not asking ourselves "what should I want?" or "what should I need?" but instead acknowledging where we are now, in this moment. Take some time to truly consider why you've decided to join this spiritual retreat for this week, what you hope to get out of it, and what you truly need from God today.
